Sleepers (1996)
Sleepers (1996), an American crime drama film, was written, produced and directed by Barry Levinson. It is based on Lorenzo Carcaterra’s novel of the same name. Childhood friends Lorenzo ‘Shakes’ Carcaterra, Tommy Marcano, Michael Sullivan and John Reilly reside in Hell’s Kitchen during the 1960s. Their parish priest Father ‘Bobby’ Carillo, who has had a troubled past himself, attempts to guide them towards making good decisions. While still engaging in pranks and working for local gangster King Benny, the boys take things too far when they accidentally cause harm to a man while stealing a hot-dog cart in the summer of 1967. As a result, all four are sentenced to time at Wilkinson Home for Boys juvenile detention center in Upstate New York; Shakes receives six-to-twelve months while the others serve 12-to-18 months.
During their stay, they are repeatedly subjected to sexual abuse and torture by head guards Sean Nokes, Henry Addison, Ralph Ferguson, and Adam Styler. Along with the regular mistreatment, the boys are also forced to participate in Wilkinson’s annual football game between the guards and inmates. Michael manages to persuade fellow inmate Rizzo Robinson to aid in winning the game. In response, the guards are infuriated and move the boys to solitary confinement for weeks, where they endure a series of brutal beatings. Sadly, Rizzo does not survive this punishment and his family is told he had passed away from pneumonia. As Shakes’s release date from Wilkinson approaches in spring 1968, he proposes that they publicly reveal the abuse they have suffered.
