12 Years a Slave (2013)
The biographical drama film, 12 Years a Slave (2013), is based on the slave memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup. Directed by Steve McQueen and written by John Ridley, it follows the story of Northup, an African American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery in Louisiana for 12 years. Prior to his abduction, Northup was a free man living with his family in Saratoga Springs, New York and working as a violinist. Brown and Hamilton tricked him into taking short-term employment in Washington, but instead delivered him to James H. Birch, the owner of a slave pen. Despite declaring his freedom, Northup is violently beaten and tortured. He is then transported to New Orleans with other slaves who advise him to adapt if he wants to survive in the South.
Theophilus Freeman, a slave trader, changes Northup’s name to ‘Platt’ and sells him to William Ford, the owner of a plantation. Ford takes a liking to Northup and gifts him with a violin. However, tensions arise between Northup and John Tibeats, the carpenter on the plantation, when Northup defends himself against an attack from Tibeats and ends up using his own whip against him. Tibeats and his men plan to hang Northup, but the overseer intervenes just in time. Despite being left hanging for hours with a noose around his neck, Northup is rescued by Ford when he arrives on the scene. However, instead of listening to Northup’s explanation of what happened, Ford sells him to Edwin Epps, another plantation owner who is known for his cruel treatment of slaves. It is here that Northup meets Patsey, one of Epps’ favored slaves who is also his top cotton picker.
