13 Reasons Why (2017–2020) is an American teen drama television series created for Netflix by Brian Yorkey, based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why written by Jay Asher. It centers around high school student Clay Jensen and the aftermath of his fellow classmate Hannah Baker’s suicide. The story takes place in the fictional county of Evergreen, California, and primarily follows Liberty High student Clay as he receives a set of cassette tapes at his front porch. These tapes were recorded by Hannah, who tragically killed herself two weeks prior, and they reveal thirteen reasons why she took her own life. Each tape reveals how various people in Hannah’s life, including Justin Foley, Jessica Davis, Alex Standall, Tyler Down, Courtney Crimsen, Marcus Cole, Zach Dempsey, Ryan Shaver, Sheri Holland, Clay himself, Hannah herself, Bryce Walker, and school counselor Kevin Porter are connected to her death.

In the second season, Hannah’s tapes are released online while her parents file a lawsuit against the school district. This further highlights the impact of the previous year’s events on the students of Liberty High. As we fast forward eight months to the third season, a new student named Ani Achola takes over as narrator. Clay and his friends are faced with keeping Tyler’s attempted school shooting a secret and helping him through his recovery. With tensions rising among those mentioned in the tapes following Bryce’s death, Clay becomes a suspect. The season examines Bryce’s actions and how he changed after Hannah’s tapes were made public. In the fourth and final season, Clay struggles with his mental health after losing both Bryce and Monty. Meanwhile, other students at Liberty High prepare for graduation and their future.
