The film 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by Roselyne Bosch, tells the story of Christopher Columbus’s quest to sail westward to Asia. Despite knowing that the world is round, Columbus faces challenges in securing a crew and ship for his journey. The Catholic theologians at the University of Salamanca strongly oppose his plan, as it goes against the teachings of Ptolemy. However, Columbus finds support from Martín Pinzón, a shipowner from Palos, who introduces him to banker Santángel. In exchange for bringing back riches in gold, Queen Isabella I grants Columbus permission to embark on his journey. Deceiving his crew with false promises of a short voyage, Columbus faces difficulties when no land is sighted after nine weeks at sea.

As tensions rise among the crew and mutiny seems imminent, Columbus gives an inspiring speech that motivates them to continue their duties during a sudden storm. At night, Columbus notices mosquitoes on the deck, signaling land nearby. Suddenly, emerging from the mist, they catch sight of the lush vegetation and sandy beaches of Guanahani. There, they befriend the local natives who have collected gold. With one of them, Columbus teaches Spanish to facilitate communication. Before he departs for Spain, he informs them of his plans to return with more Europeans in tow to colonize the Americas. Back in Spain, he is honored by the queen and joins a dinner with the council. Although they express disappointment with his meager amount of gold, the queen approves of his gifts.
