1917 (2019)
Directed and produced by Sam Mendes, the British war film 1917 (2019) was co-written by Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Partially inspired by his paternal grandfather Alfred’s experiences in World War I, the film is set after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich. On April 6th, aerial reconnaissance reveals that the Imperial German Army has strategically withdrawn to the new line and is waiting with artillery to attack the British. With field telephone lines cut, General Erinmore orders two young lance corporals, William Schofield and Tom Blake, to deliver a message to Colonel Mackenzie of the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. The message calls off a planned attack that would put 1,600 men, including Blake’s brother Joseph, at risk.
Schofield and Blake make their way through no man’s land towards the deserted German trenches. Along the journey, Schofield sustains an injury to his left hand. As they enter an underground barracks, they stumble upon a tripwire set by the Germans, which is accidentally triggered by a rat. The resulting explosion nearly takes Schofield’s life, but he is saved by Blake, who then guides them both to safety. They eventually arrive at an abandoned farmhouse, where they witness a German plane being shot down in a battle with Allied aircraft. After rescuing the injured pilot from the wreckage, Blake convinces Schofield to retrieve water for him. However, when Schofield turns away for a moment, the pilot unexpectedly stabs Blake. In self-defense, Schofield shoots and kills the pilot before tending to Blake as he passes away. Promising to fulfill their mission and write to Blake’s mother, Schofield retrieves Blake’s personal belongings – his rings and dog tag – along with Erinmore’s letter before being picked up by a British unit passing by.
