The film, 1922 (2017), is an American horror drama written and directed by Zak Hilditch, based on Stephen King’s novella from 2010. The story follows Wilfred ‘Wilf’ James, a farmer residing in Hemingford Home, Nebraska with his wife Arlette and their 14-year-old son Henry. The couple has been at odds over Arlette’s recent inheritance of land; Wilf strongly opposes her plans to sell the farm and relocate to Omaha, citing that a man’s pride is rooted in his land. In a drastic move to protect his property and his son (whom Arlette disapproves of dating), Wilf manipulates Henry into helping him murder his mother. With Shannon, Henry’s girlfriend, as collateral, Henry reluctantly agrees to take part in the crime. To keep up appearances and appease Arlette, Wilf pretends to approve of the sale while secretly plotting with his son. As Arlette celebrates with alcohol, she becomes intoxicated.
Wilf planned to bury Arlette on his corn fields, but Henry collapses from the ordeal. As a result, Wilf decides to dispose of her body in a dry well where rats soon feed upon it. The following day, they lower a cow into the well as a cover-up for Arlette’s body and to fill it in. However, Sheriff Jones becomes suspicious of Arlette’s sudden disappearance. While searching the house, he questions Wilf about Arlette and Wilf claims she left them voluntarily. Finding no evidence of foul play, Sheriff Jones leaves with doubts about Wilf’s story. Over time, Henry becomes withdrawn and filled with remorse for their actions. His girlfriend Shannon becomes increasingly worried and eventually reveals that she is pregnant with their child.
