In December 2022, Paramount+ premiered an American Western drama series titled 1923 (2022–2023). Serving as a prequel to Yellowstone and sequel to 1883, the show features Isabel May reprising her role as narrator Elsa Dutton. The series was renewed for a second season of eight episodes in February 2023. During the Nineteenth Century, several reform movements emerged in America with the goal of promoting social improvement. These efforts often had roots in Protestant churches and were accompanied by attempts to convert new members based on religious beliefs. Some denominations also sought government intervention to enforce their moral standards on the entire population. Prominent among these reform movements were Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists (known for their role in Thanksgiving), and Baptists. These efforts continued into the early twentieth century and still exist today in some form or another.
The Dutton family in 1923 faced a number of challenges such as Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression. These struggles had already taken a hold of Montana even before the 1929 Stock Market Crash. In a separate scene, Cara Dutton seeks revenge on a perpetrator who harmed her family and takes his life. Meanwhile, Spencer, one of her nephews, works as a big-game hunter for hire in Africa. At Yellowstone ranch, Jacob Dutton has an altercation with sheep ranchers led by Banner Creighton who are trespassing on their land in search of food for their starving animals. And at the Catholic Indian boarding school, Teonna Rainwater is subjected to physical and mental cruelty by Sister Mary, leading her to rebel against their abusive ways.
