1969 (1988)
The American drama film 1969 (1988), written and directed by Ernest Thompson, follows the story of two boys, Ralph and Scott. After hitchhiking home from college, they arrive on Easter morning and call out greetings to their families during a lakeside Easter Sunrise service. This brings amusement to Ralph’s sister, Beth, and mother, Ev, but embarrasses Scott’s parents, Jessie and Cliff. Later on, the boys take Scott’s older brother Alden to the bus depot as he is about to ship off to Vietnam. A fight breaks out between Alden and Scott when the latter accuses his marine brother of being afraid to go. Just then, their father arrives and wonders what all the commotion is about. After a few weeks, Scott and Ralph return home from college for Beth’s high school graduation.
However, during the ceremony, they discover that Ralph has flunked out of college, making him eligible to be drafted. Wanting to experience the freedom of the counterculture movement, the boys decide to spend their summer living on the road in their van. Eventually, they make their way back to their hometown in time for the annual summer festival. However, while there, they learn that Alden has gone missing and is considered MIA. In an attempt to help their friend, Scott and Ralph come up with a plan to steal their draft board office files. Unfortunately, they are caught and Ralph is arrested. This only strengthens Scott’s determination to avoid a similar fate by heading to Canada instead of risking being drafted.
