200 Cigarettes (1999), an American comedy film directed by Risa Bramon Garcia and written by Shana Larsen, features multiple plot lines that all take place on New Year’s Eve of 1981. While Monica anxiously awaits the start of her big party, only her friend Hillary has arrived. As Monica tries to persuade Hillary to stay, we see other groups making their way to the event. Throughout the film, we follow these characters as they spend New Year’s Eve in New York City and eventually end up at Monica’s celebration.

After some time had passed, all guests arrived at the party. However, Monica had become unconscious due to excessive drinking as a way of coping with her sorrows. The following day, she woke up to unfamiliar faces in her room, including Stephie who informs her of the great success of her party. Monica is overjoyed, despite missing out on all of it, especially when she learns that Elvis Costello had made an appearance. A montage of Polaroids from the night follows, narrated by the disco cabbie and showcasing unexpected romances and a passed out Monica being supported by her friends.
