2012 (2009) is a science fiction film directed and written by Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser. American geologist Adrian Helmsley travels to East India in 2009 to meet with astrophysicist Satnam Tsurutani, where he learns about a new type of neutrino causing the Earth’s core to heat up. Upon his return to Washington D.C., Adrian informs White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser and President Thomas Wilson. The following year, over forty-six nations work together to build nine arks in Tibet and secure important artifacts. Nima, a Buddhist monk, is evacuated with his grandparents while his brother Tenzin joins the ark project. The remaining funding is raised through selling tickets for €1 billion per person to wealthy individuals. In present day 2012, Jackson Curtis works as a chauffeur in Los Angeles for Russian billionaire Yuri Karpov. His ex-wife Kate and their children live with her boyfriend Gordon Silberman, a plastic surgeon and amateur pilot.
Jackson takes his companions, Noah and Lilly, on a camping trip in Yellowstone National Park. However, their plans are disrupted when they stumble upon a fenced-off and dried-up Yellowstone Lake guarded by the United States Army. They are subsequently brought to Adrian for questioning. While there, they have a chance encounter with Charlie Frost, a self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist and radio host. Charlie shares his belief in Charles Hapgood’s earth crust displacement theory and warns Jackson that the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar predicts a worldwide catastrophe in 2012. He also reveals that governments silence anyone who attempts to warn the public about the impending disaster. Although initially skeptical, Jackson becomes more convinced after noticing signs that support Charlie’s claims.
