5 Card Stud (1968)
The American Western mystery film, 5 Card Stud (1968), directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum, tells the story of a gambler in Rincon, a small town located 100 miles from Denver, Colorado. The gambler is caught cheating at a game of five-card stud poker and is later lynched by the other players, led by the volatile Nick Evers. One of the players, Van Morgan, attempts to prevent the act of frontier justice, but is unsuccessful. He ultimately leaves town but returns after learning that several of the players from the poker game have been gruesomely murdered.
The town’s latest addition is none other than Reverend Rudd, a no-nonsense Baptist preacher who carries a Colt .45 at his side. As members of the lynch mob continue to meet their demise, it becomes evident that someone is seeking retribution. Determined to uncover the truth, Morgan takes on the task of solving the mystery. However, after all but him are eliminated from the poker game, Morgan comes to the chilling realization that Rudd is the culprit behind the murders and must face him in a deadly shootout.
