50 First Dates (2004)
50 First Dates (2004) is a romantic comedy directed by Peter Segal. The movie follows Henry Roth, a marine veterinarian at Sea Life Park Hawaii on Oahu, who has a unique dating approach – he only dates tourists to avoid getting too serious. Henry’s circle of friends includes Ula, an Islander who loves smoking marijuana; Alexa, his androgynous assistant; Willy, his beloved pet African penguin; and Jocko, the friendly park walrus. One day, while waiting for the Coast Guard at the Hukilau Café after his boat breaks down, Henry meets Lucy Whitmore, an art teacher who is making architectural art with her waffles. Due to his assumption that she is a local resident, Henry tries to stick to his usual womanizing routine but fails. The next day at the café, he runs into Lucy once again and they hit it off over breakfast.
Lucy agrees to meet him for breakfast the following morning. The next day, unfortunately, Lucy shows no recollection of their previous encounter. Sue, the owner of the restaurant, explains to Henry that a year ago, Lucy and her father Marlin had taken a trip to the North Shore to pick a pineapple for his birthday. On their way back, a cow had wandered onto the road through a broken fence, resulting in a car accident. As a result, Lucy was diagnosed with anterograde amnesia – meaning she can remember everything prior to the accident but not form new memories after that night. To spare her from reliving the traumatic event, Marlin and Doug, Lucy’s brother who struggles with addiction, re-enact her father’s birthday each day.
