(500) Days of Summer (2009)
(500) Days of Summer (2009) is a romantic comedy-drama film directed by Marc Webb and produced by Mark Waters. The story follows Tom Hansen, an aspiring architect who works as a writer at a greeting card company. His job brings him into contact with a new employee, Summer Finn. Despite their initial differences, they bond over their shared taste in music at a company karaoke night. As they talk about love, Tom’s hopeful beliefs clash with Summer’s more cynical perspective. Meanwhile, Tom’s friend and co-worker McKenzie reveals his hidden feelings for Summer, which she only sees as a friendship. However, things take a turn when Summer unexpectedly kisses Tom at the office. While initially hesitant to commit, Tom agrees to a casual relationship. Their physical intimacy brings them closer over the next few months, but their undefined status causes confusion among Tom’s friends and younger sister Rachel.
When pressured to define their relationship, Summer dismisses the question as long as they are both happy. One night, Tom has a confrontation with a man who tries to hit on Summer at a bar, resulting in their initial disagreement. Despite making amends, Summer acknowledges that Tom deserves some reassurance, but asking her to guarantee constant feelings for him is an unrealistic expectation. Gradually, their relationship loses its intensity and they begin to argue incessantly. In the midst of this turmoil, Summer resigns from her job at the greeting card company and ends things with Tom due to their evident discontentment. As a result of his depression affecting his performance, Tom’s boss transfers him to the consolation department. On a blind date arranged by his friends, Tom talks about Summer throughout the evening until his companion, Alison, becomes frustrated and leaves early.
