8 Mile (2002) is an American drama film written by Scott Silver and directed by Curtis Hanson. Featuring Eminem in his film debut, it contains elements from the rapper’s own life story. The plot centers around Detroit artist Jimmy Smith Jr., also known as B-Rabbit. In 1995, Jimmy is a budding musician who goes by the name B-Rabbit. He comes from a low-income family living in a trailer park just outside of Detroit. To support his mother Stephanie, younger sister Lily, and Stephanie’s abusive boyfriend Greg, Jimmy has moved into their rundown trailer home. Despite encouragement from friends, he doubts his abilities as a rapper. After a humiliating incident at a local venue, the Shelter, where he fails to deliver during a rap battle, Jimmy starts to feel increasingly self-conscious about his potential.
During the day, he works in a car factory and desperately tries to get extra shifts but is turned down due to his habitual tardiness. However, things start looking up for him when he befriends Alex and takes more control over his life. While getting ready for work one morning, Stephanie discovers an eviction notice that threatens their already precarious living situation. Jimmy’s relationship with his friend Wink, who has connections to a record label promoter, becomes tense when he learns that Wink helps promote their rival rap group, ‘Leaders of the Free World’. During a heated altercation between Jimmy and his friends and the Free World crew, Cheddar Bob pulls out a gun to intimidate them, but ends up accidentally shooting himself in the leg. Fortunately, he is quickly taken to the hospital and survives.
