8 Seconds (1994)

8 Seconds (1994) is a riveting American contemporary Western biographical drama film directed by John G. Avildsen. Growing up in Oklahoma, Lane Frost develops his bull riding skills under the guidance of his father Clyde, who is an accomplished bronc rider himself. As he embarks on a journey through the professional rodeo circuit with his close companions Tuff Hedeman and Cody Lambert, Lane also finds love with a talented barrel racer named Kellie Kyle. Despite the mounting pressure to live up to his growing fame and reputation, Lane remains determined to prove himself as one of the best riders in the sport. However, during his pursuit of the 1987 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bull riding world championship, Lane faces challenges such as a cheating scandal, doubts about Kellie’s loyalty, and a dangerous injury that almost ends his career.
The film also chronicles his journey through the real-life series against Red Rock, a notoriously unbeatable bull. The series is condensed to three rides. In 1989, Lane competes as the second-to-last rider on the final day of the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. He conquers Takin’ Care of Business but is struck by the bull’s horn as he dismounts, fracturing ribs and causing a serious artery injury. Despite efforts to save him, Lane passes away in the arena from severe internal bleeding. In the concluding scene, we see Hedeman riding for the world championship at the National Finals Rodeo later that year.
