A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) is an American biographical drama film directed by Marielle Heller, centered around TV presenter Fred Rogers. In 1998, during an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Mr. Rogers showcases a picture board with five doors. Three are opened to reveal familiar faces – Lady Aberlin, King Friday, and Mr. McFeely. The fourth door reveals the face of Lloyd Vogel, a troubled new friend of Mr. Rogers sporting a black eye and cut near his nose. Lloyd has been hurt (though not necessarily on his face) and is struggling to forgive the person who hurt him. After defining forgiveness for viewers, Mr. Rogers sets off to visit Lloyd himself.
During the reception, Jerry approaches Lloyd and comments on his son’s new family. He then proceeds to make a joke about Lila, whom Lloyd’s mother he cheated on and left while she was battling cancer two decades ago. This leads to an outburst from Lloyd, resulting in a brawl that leaves him with a scar on his face. As fate would have it, Lloyd’s editor Ellen assigns him the task of interviewing Fred Rogers, known for hosting a beloved children’s television show. Despite feeling like this assignment is beneath him, Lloyd is informed that none of the other potential interviewees were willing to talk to him. Still doubtful, he wonders if Mister Rogers is truly as genuine as he appears. Determined to find out for himself, Lloyd travels to Pittsburgh to interview him at the WQED studio. Rather than relishing in his fame, Rogers displays concern for Lloyd’s injury sustained during the brawl.
