A Bigger Splash (2015)
A Bigger Splash (2015) is a psychological drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino with a screenplay by David Kajganich, based on a story by Alain Page. Set in an isolated villa on the small Italian island of Pantelleria, the film follows world-famous rock singer Marianne Lane and her filmmaker lover Paul De Smedt as they vacation together. Marianne is recovering from surgery and has lost her voice, communicating through signs and whispers. Meanwhile, Paul is overcoming alcohol addiction and a recent suicide attempt. Despite neither speaking Italian, their time alone is soon interrupted by unexpected guests. Among them is Harry Hawkes, an extroverted music producer who used to be Marianne’s lover before passing her on to his protégé, Paul. Accompanying him is Penelope “Pen” Lanier, a previously unknown daughter claiming to be 22 years old. Upon moving in with the couple, Harry takes charge of the villa and begins inviting friends over for various outings and social gatherings.
His arrogant demeanor annoys both Pen and Paul; however, Marianne cannot resist his charm and becomes involved with him. When things get physical between Harry and Marianne, she abruptly ends things and admits her love for him to be with Paul instead. Meanwhile, the seductive Pen sets her sights on the unhappy Paul, leading to the implication that he gives in to her advances. After drinking alone, Harry returns and starts a brawl with Paul by the pool. During their struggle, they both fall into the water and continue their fight. In an effort to subdue Harry, Paul holds him underwater but accidentally causes his death. Realizing his mistake, Paul tries to resuscitate Harry but is unsuccessful, ultimately leaving him at the bottom of the pool where he is discovered by the maid in the morning and reported to the police.
