A Christmas Carol (2009)
In London on Christmas Eve 1843, Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009) follows the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a stingy miser who despises the joyous festivities of the holiday season. Despite his nephew Fred’s invitation to a Christmas dinner party and the urging of two charity workers, Scrooge refuses to participate in any acts of kindness or generosity. His dedicated employee Bob Cratchit must even ask for a single day off on Christmas Day, which Scrooge reluctantly grants. However, when Scrooge encounters the ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley at home, he soon realizes that his selfish ways may lead him down a path of eternal suffering. Marley warns him that he will be visited by three spirits over three consecutive nights, despite Scrooge’s suggestion for them to all come at once.
The candle-like Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge on a journey back to his childhood in a lonely boarding school. He is reunited with his beloved little sister Fan, who has passed away and is now the mother of Fred. Scrooge then becomes an employee of Fezziwig and falls in love with a woman named Belle, but his growing obsession with wealth causes her to leave him. Overwhelmed, Scrooge puts out the spirit’s light and is transported back to his home. He is then greeted by the jolly Ghost of Christmas Present, who shows him the true joys of the holiday season. Together, they visit Bob’s house and see that despite their small dinner, his family is happy and content. The Ghost also points out Tiny Tim, Bob’s ill son whom Scrooge takes pity on as he learns that without change in events, Tim may not survive.
