A Fine Madness (1966)
A Fine Madness (1966) is a Technicolor comedy-drama film directed by Irvin Kershner. It is based on the novel of the same name written by Elliott Baker in 1964. The story centers around Samson Shillitoe, a poet living in Greenwich Village with his supportive wife Rhoda, who works as a waitress. However, Samson’s struggles with writer’s block lead to outbursts of aggression and sadness. On top of this, he is constantly pursued by a debt collector for unpaid alimony to his ex-wife and faces potential arrest if he does not pay up. His troubles escalate when he loses his job as an office cleaner after having sex with one of the secretaries and causing chaos with soap suds from his cleaning equipment. Despite all this, Samson manages to earn $200 for performing his poetry to a women’s group – though it ends disastrously.
Rhoda secretly seeks help for Samson’s writer’s block from psychiatrist Dr. West, using the money she raised for his lecture. Fearing that Samson may fall into deep depression if he does not complete his poem, Rhoda entrusts Dr. West to treat him. After some convincing, Dr. West agrees to see Samson and becomes intrigued by him, ultimately convincing him to become a patient. To give Samson a break from his chaotic urban life and aid in his writing process, Dr. West arranges for him to stay at a sanitarium upstate. However, another doctor at the sanitarium, Dr. Menken, has ulterior motives and plans to experiment on Samson with a new surgical technique to control his violent temper.
