An American drama film, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006), is based on a memoir written by Dito Montiel. The story follows Dito’s youth in Astoria, New York during the 1980s. In present day (2005), we find Dito living in Los Angeles and working as a successful writer. Upon the urging of his mother, Flori, and friend, Nerf, he returns to his childhood home in Astoria when his father falls ill. The movie shifts between present day and flashbacks of Dito’s memories from the summer of 1986. During this time, Dito meets up with Nerf in a parked car to talk without interruption, since it wasn’t possible at Nerf’s house. He also reconnects with Laurie, his childhood sweetheart who is now a mother. However, their conversation takes place through an open window as she does not invite him inside. Finally, Dito visits his overprotective father Monty whose past actions have caused tension in their relationship and prevented Dito from venturing out on his own travels.

In 1986, Antonio, an overconfident and volatile boy with a history of abuse from his father, seeks revenge on the Puerto Rican gang member Reaper for attacking his friend Dito. As the events unfold, we are introduced to Antonio’s younger brother Giuseppe, who is reckless, destructive, and may possibly be mentally unstable. Tragically, Giuseppe meets his demise when he lies on a subway track and fails to heed the warnings from his brother and their friend Nerf about an approaching train. Dito’s other friend Mike O’Shea is a Scottish boy with aspirations of becoming a musician. The two plan to travel to California by bus and work for a man named Frank who runs a dog-walking business. However, when they go to collect their wages from Frank’s house, they realize he has been slow in paying them and confront him about it.
