A Hidden Life (2019)

A Hidden Life (2019) is an epic historical drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick. Born and raised in the small village of St. Radegund, Austrian peasant farmer Franz Jägerstätter is tending to his land when war breaks out. Alongside his wife Franziska, affectionately known as Fani, they are valued members of their close-knit rural community, living a humble life with their three daughters. However, Franz is called for basic training in the German army and must leave behind his beloved family for an extended period. When France surrenders and it appears that the war may soon end, he is sent home from training. Together with his mother and sister-in-law Resie, they continue to work on the farm and raise their children amidst the beautiful mountains and valleys of upper Austria, tirelessly cutting hay and gathering resources. But as the war rages on, Jägerstätter and other able-bodied men from the village are called to serve in battle once again.
Initially, they are required to pledge their allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Despite opposition from the mayor and fellow locals, who increasingly shun him and his family, and also from the Bishop of Linz, Jägerstätter stands firm in his refusal. While grappling with the awareness that this choice will result in imprisonment or death, he draws strength from his faith in God, his prayers, and Fani’s unwavering love and support. He is subsequently imprisoned first in Enns and then Berlin, where he awaits his trial for several months. During this time apart, he and Fani exchange letters to uplift each other’s spirits. Meanwhile, Fani and their daughters become targets of animosity in their community due to Jägerstätter’s stance on non-combat. However, after some time, Fani manages to visit her husband in Berlin.
