A Hologram for the King (2016)
The comedy-drama film, A Hologram for the King (2016), is a creation of writer, director, and co-composer Tom Tykwer. It is based on the novel by Dave Eggers published in 2012. Starring American salesman Alan Clay, the film follows his mission to sell a holographic teleconferencing system to the Saudi government and present it to their King. Clay was offered this opportunity due to his brief encounter with one of the King’s nephews. However, he carries baggage from a previous job where he witnessed layoffs and financial ruin caused by outsourcing production. Furthermore, his personal life is not any better as he struggles with depression arising from a costly divorce that leaves him unable to support his daughter Kitty. On his first day in Saudi Arabia, jet-lag causes him to oversleep and miss his shuttle for the sales presentation. He then decides to rent a car and enlists the help of Yousef, who reveals that he is in contact with a woman fearing for her life due to her wealthy and jealous husband.
After his arrival, Clay learns that both the King and his direct contact, Karim Al-Ahmed, are unavailable. His team is housed in a tent outside the office building without adequate food or internet access. Over the next few days, Clay finds himself oversleeping frequently and needing Yousef to drive him to the development site. As they spend more time together on these drives, they become closer. However, at the development site, Clay is repeatedly turned away and confined to his tent. One day, he manages to sneak into the building where he meets Hanne, a Danish executive who empathizes with his situation. Unfortunately, she is unable to assist him in reaching the King or Karim Al-Ahmed. In an attempt to lift his spirits, she offers him what appears to be olive oil but is actually alcohol – something Clay has been craving since arriving in Saudi Arabia.
