A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
A film called A Life Less Ordinary (1997) is categorized as a British romantic black comedy. In this movie, angels from Heaven have the duty of ensuring that humans on Earth find true love. One particular angel, known as the ‘Captain’ and named Gabriel, becomes disgruntled when reviewing the performance of angel partners O’Reilly and Jackson. He notices that all of their recent cases have resulted in either divorce or misery for the couple involved. To shake things up, Gabriel suggests a new approach: if their next assigned pair fails to fall and remain in love (which he admits is a challenging task), O’Reilly and Jackson must remain on Earth indefinitely. On Earth, we meet Celine Naville, a privileged twenty-something whose father is affluent, and Robert Lewis, a janitor employed by her father’s company. After being replaced by a robot at work, Robert turns to alcohol for comfort at a nearby bar.
Later on, his girlfriend Lily reveals that she is leaving him for her aerobics instructor. In an effort to come together, O’Reilly and Jackson masquerade as debt collectors and forcible remove Robert from his apartment. In a fit of rage, Robert bursts into Mr. Naville’s office and, after disarming a security guard, decides to abduct Celine. He takes her to a secluded cabin in the forests of California. Despite easily freeing herself from restraints, Celine chooses to stay for the thrill and to seek revenge against her father by proposing they demand a large ransom. The angels assume the roles of bounty hunters and agree with Mr. Naville to retrieve Celine and eliminate Robert. Although Robert’s first attempt at obtaining the ransom fails, Celine encourages him to try again.
