A film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedic play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999), was written, produced, and directed by Michael Hoffman. Set in the 1890s in Monte Athena, a fictional Italian kingdom, the story follows the preparations for Duke Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding banquet. During this time, Egeus, father of young Hermia, approaches the Duke to request his support in forcing his daughter to marry Demetrius. Egeus threatens that Hermia will die if she does not comply. In response, Theseus offers Hermia four days to decide between marrying Demetrius, becoming a nun, or facing death. Meanwhile, Lysander and Hermia plan to escape their arranged marriage by fleeing to the forest.

They confide in their friend Helena who is also struggling with her unrequited love for Demetrius after having an affair with him. While Peter Quince, the theater director, is assigning roles for his production of Pyramus and Thisbe, the townspeople mock actor Nick Bottom. In response, the acting troupe decides to relocate their rehearsals to the forest. Helena tells Demetrius about Hermia and Lysander’s plan and eagerly follows him into the woods like a besotted puppy. Despite Demetrius’ attempts to dissuade her, she remains steadfast in her obsessive love. As they venture deeper into the forest, they stumble upon the fairy realm ruled by Oberon and Titania, the fairy King and Queen.
