A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy (1982) is an American science fiction film written and directed by Woody Allen. Set during the transition from the 19th to 20th century, the movie follows Andrew and Adrian, a couple who spend every summer at their cottage in the New York woods. While Andrew is a Wall Street investment advisor with a knack for inventing novelty items, Adrian has been struggling with a mental block that has caused them to go six months without intimacy. Seeking some excitement, they invite two couples to stay with them for a weekend. Among them is Andrew’s close friend Maxwell, a promiscuous doctor known for his relationships with patients. He brings along his new and youthful nurse, Dulcy, who may seem innocent on the surface but possesses aggressive sexual knowledge thanks to her understanding of anatomy.
Adrian’s older cousin, Leopold, is a well-traveled philosophy professor who will be tying the knot with his younger fiancée, Ariel. However, Andrew and Adrian have yet to meet them… or so they claim. What Andrew has been hesitating to tell Adrian, especially given their previous intimacy struggles, is that Ariel is actually an ex-girlfriend of his whom he once brought to the cottage – something that eventually comes to light. As their weekend progresses and the impending marriage draws near, it becomes apparent that each person at the cottage has their own hidden or not-so-hidden agenda. For instance, Maxwell – who has never experienced love until now – finds himself smitten with Ariel at first sight and is determined to express his feelings for her. He cannot stand the thought of her marrying Leopold, whom he sees as nothing more than an arrogant individual.
