Newsies (1992)
Walt Disney Pictures released the American historical musical drama film, Newsies (1992). It was directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega and is set in New York City in 1899. The story follows a group of struggling newspaper sellers, known as ‘newsies’, who are trying to make ends meet by selling copies of the New York World on the streets (‘Carrying the Banner’). When two brothers named David and Les join the group, their intelligence and charm catch the attention of their leader, Jack ‘Cowboy’ Kelly. Jack takes them under his wing and begins to admire their work ethic as they sell papers to support their family after their father lost his job due to an injury. During a dinner at the Jacobs’ home, Jack becomes infatuated with David’s sister Sarah. As he longs for a family of his own, Jack daydreams about leaving New York for New Mexico (‘Santa Fe’).
However, when Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices without giving credit to his right-hand man Bunsen or considering how it will affect the newsies, Jack and David take action. They rally all the Manhattan newsies together to go on strike in protest (‘The World Will Know’). As the others spread word to newsies in New York’s various boroughs, Jack and Les take on a confrontation with Pulitzer, resulting in their immediate removal from his office. Bryan Denton, a reporter from The Sun, takes an interest in the boys’ tale. With the help of David, they also notify the Brooklyn newsies and their leader ‘Spot’ Conlon, who reluctantly opposes the strike. David then rallies the disheartened Manhattan newsies (‘Seize the Day’), leading them to attack and destroy the distribution center.
