While at the Springwood Diner, Dean Russell falls asleep and is attacked by a grotesque figure dressed in seared clothing and sporting a bladed gardener’s glove on his right hand. The dream ends with Dean’s death. At his funeral, Kris discovers an old photograph of herself and Dean as children, but she has no recollection of knowing him before high school. As she begins to have nightmares about the burnt man, Kris becomes afraid to sleep for fear of suffering Dean’s fate. Jesse Braun, her ex-boyfriend, keeps her company while she rests but even he is unable to protect her from her dreams as she ultimately meets her demise at the hands of the charred killer.
After running to Nancy’s house, Jesse discovers that she has been haunted by the same terrifying figure – Freddy Krueger. Unfortunately, Jesse’s troubles only escalate as he is taken into police custody for suspicion of a murder and meets his own demise at the hands of Krueger while asleep in his cell. With each loss of her friends, Nancy begins to question their strange connection – particularly since none of them can recall each other from their childhoods. However, after some investigation with her friend Quentin Smith, they uncover a shocking truth: they actually attended the same preschool together. Despite her reluctance, Nancy’s mother Gwen reveals more information about Krueger, who was actually the groundskeeper at their old preschool. Disturbingly, Gwen recalls how Nancy was his favorite and had confided in her about being abused in a secret location.
