A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989) is an American gothic slasher film directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by Leslie Bohem. In June 1989, a year after the last installment, Alice and Dan have begun dating without any sign of Freddy Krueger. After a steamy encounter, Alice has a shower and envisions herself in a nun’s habit labeled Amanda Krueger at an unusual asylum. She encounters patients who attack her, but she wakes up unharmed. The following day, Alice graduates from high school with her new group of friends: Greta, a hesitant aspiring model; Mark, a fan of comic books; and Yvonne, a volunteer at the hospital and swimmer. She confides in Dan about her nightmare, and he assures her that she has power over her dreams. On her way to work, Alice finds herself back at the asylum where she witnesses Amanda giving birth to an abnormally heinous baby.
While Amanda tries to retrieve the child before it escapes, it slips out of the operating room unnoticed. In the last film, Alice had defeated Freddy in the church. She now follows a baby inside, but instead of being relieved, she becomes alarmed as the baby grows into an adult and hints at Freddy’s return. She calls Dan for help, but he falls asleep on his way to see her. Unfortunately, Freddy attacks Dan and turns him into a terrifying man-machine hybrid before causing a fatal accident. Alice is horrified as she witnesses Dan’s body come to life and taunt her before losing consciousness. The next thing she knows, she wakes up in a hospital and learns of both Dan’s death and her own pregnancy with his child.
