A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
An American romantic comedy film A Rainy Day in New York (2019), written and directed by Woody Allen, Gatsby Welles is a brainy and eccentric student at Yardley College. He comes from a wealthy family in New York City and is also known for his successful gambling. When Ashleigh Enright, Gatsby’s girlfriend who is majoring in journalism from Tucson, needs to interview independent director Roland Pollard for their school paper, he decides to join her on the trip to Manhattan. While hoping for a romantic weekend in the city, Gatsby must also avoid his parents who are hosting a gala that evening. Their relationship is complicated and he wants to steer clear of them. However, things take an unexpected turn when Pollard invites Ashleigh to a private screening of his new film, disrupting Gatsby’s plans and leaving him disappointed.
While taking a leisurely walk through the bustling streets of New York, Gatsby unexpectedly runs into an old acquaintance – a film student working on a short project. In need of an actor for a scene involving a kiss, the student enlists Gatsby’s help. Much to his surprise, the co-star in the shot turns out to be Chan Tyrell, the younger sister of one of Gatsby’s former girlfriends. It seems their paths keep crossing as they both end up hailing the same taxi. However, Gatsby’s plans for romance with Ashleigh are put on hold due to her growing involvement with Pollard and his struggling screenwriter, Ted Davidoff. Feeling slighted and aimless without any set plans, Gatsby accompanies Chan to her family’s apartment where he serenades them on their piano with “Everything Happens to Me.” Over talks of their mutual adoration for New York City, they come to an agreement that it is one of the most romantic places – especially on rainy days.
