A Time to Kill (1996)
A Time to Kill (1996), an American legal drama film, is based on John Grisham’s 1989 novel of the same name. In Canton, Mississippi in 1984, ten-year-old African American girl Tonya Hailey is assaulted by two local white men, Billy Ray Cobb and James Willard, while returning home from running errands. Despite their attempt to hang her and leave her in a nearby river, Tonya manages to survive and the two men are apprehended by Sheriff Ozzie Walls. Seeking justice for his daughter, Tonya’s father Carl Lee Hailey enlists the help of Jake Brigance, a white lawyer who previously defended his brother Lester. Knowing that there is a chance of the rapists walking free, Jake takes on Carl Lee’s case. In an act of retaliation at the county courthouse, Carl Lee opens fire with an automatic rifle in which both rapists are killed and Deputy Dwayne Looney is injured.
As a result, Carl Lee is arrested and Jake agrees to represent him. After gaining national media attention, the subsequent revenge killing prompts district attorney Rufus Buckley to take on the case, hoping it will boost his political career. He pushes for the death penalty and Judge Omar Noose denies Jake’s request to move the trial to a more diverse county, ensuring an all-White jury for Carl Lee. In need of a strong defense team, Brigance enlists law student Ellen Roark, close friend Harry Rex Vonner, and former civil rights lawyer Lucien Wilbanks. Meanwhile, Billy Ray’s brother Freddie Lee Cobb schemes with the Mississippi Ku Klux Klan and Grand Dragon Stump Sisson to ensure Carl Lee’s conviction and death by any means necessary.
