A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
A Walk in the Clouds (1995) is a romantic drama film directed by Alfonso Arau. After serving in World War II, United States Army Sgt. Paul Sutton returns to San Francisco to reunite with his wife, Betty. They had a whirlwind courtship and got married just before Paul was deployed to the Pacific. However, the war has left him with deep emotional scars and he often suffers from flashbacks. Betty’s reception is not as warm as Paul hoped, especially when he discovers that she has stopped reading his letters and kept them unopened in a footlocker. Despite this, Paul is determined to make their marriage work and tries to pursue a new career for himself. However, Betty insists that he continues selling chocolates door-to-door, so he heads off to Sacramento.
During his journey, he meets Victoria Aragon, a fellow passenger who comes from a Mexican American family that owns a vineyard in the Napa Valley. When two men on their bus to Sacramento accost her, Paul steps in and defends her by getting into a fight with them. The three men are eventually kicked off the bus and Paul finds an upset Victoria farther down the road. She reveals to him that she is pregnant by her professor and he offers to pose as her husband when they meet her very traditionalist family. This idea infuriates Victoria’s father, Alberto, who is upset that she married someone below her social standing without his permission. Originally planning to quietly slip away and continue his journey, Paul’s plans change when Victoria’s grandfather, Don Pedro, convinces him to stay and help with the harvest instead of leaving them to believe he abandoned her.
