A Walk in the Woods (2015)
The American biographical comedy-drama film, A Walk in the Woods (2015), directed by Ken Kwapis, follows author Bill Bryson’s return to the US after living in the UK for ten years. Now in his 60s and settled in New Hampshire, Bryson’s peaceful life is interrupted when a TV interview reports on his successful books and speculates about future writing plans. Despite this attention, Bryson has no intentions of writing more and instead focuses on attending a funeral with his wife Catherine. During their walk afterwards, he becomes inspired to hike the entire length of the nearby Appalachian Trail. While Catherine initially objects due to safety concerns, she ultimately agrees as long as he doesn’t go alone. Unfortunately for Bryson, all of his friends decline his invitation, some even questioning his sanity.
Finally, Stephen Katz, an old friend, reaches out to offer his companionship on the hike. Despite initial concerns about his fitness level, Stephen assures Bill that he is up for the challenge. Although Bill’s wife initially disapproves of the choice, she eventually gives in. As they set off from their starting point, they are quickly passed by other hikers and begin to realize the difficulty of their goal. Seeing a group of young children effortlessly run ahead of them only further inspires them to persevere. Day by day, they continue on their journey, encountering both pleasant and unpleasant experiences along the way while making acquaintances with other hikers. Eventually, after enduring a miserable hike through pouring rain, they reach a hut where they notice an Appalachian Trail map carved into the log wall indicating their current location on the trail.
