In North Carolina, teenager Landon Carter and his friends get caught drinking underage at school and injure a fellow student in a prank. As a consequence, the principal gives Landon an ultimatum: either be expelled or participate in tutoring and the school play. During these activities, Landon finally notices Jamie Sullivan – the daughter of the local minister who he has known since kindergarten. Being part of the popular crowd, Landon has never really paid attention to Jamie, who dresses modestly and only owns one sweater. However, as he struggles to learn his lines for the play, Jamie offers to help him on one condition: that he doesn’t fall in love with her.
Despite her warning, Landon and Jamie spend time together practicing at her house after school and sparks begin to fly between them. After ignoring her in front of his friends, she decides to cut ties with him. Overcome with guilt, he takes the initiative to help her practice and rehearse. On opening night, Jamie impresses Landon and the audience with her stunning appearance and beautiful voice. During the finale of the play, Jamie sings and Landon can’t resist kissing her, despite it not being part of the script. Jamie avoids him afterwards until Landon stands up for her against his friends’ cruel prank, which reignites her feelings for him. Wanting to take her on a date, Landon discovers that Jamie’s strict father doesn’t allow dating. Determined to make things work, Landon approaches her father to ask for permission to date his daughter. Initially hesitant, he eventually gives in.
