About Time (2013), a romantic science fiction comedy-drama film written and directed by Richard Curtis, follows Tim Lake as he grows up in Cornwall. He lives with his father James, mother Mary, absent-minded uncle Desmond, and free-spirited younger sister Katherine (‘Kit Kat’) in a house by the sea. On his 21st birthday, Tim discovers that the men in his family can travel back in time to relive past moments. Although James warns him against using his gift for personal gain, Tim decides to use it to improve his love life. During the summer, Charlotte, Kit Kat’s friend, comes to visit. Tim falls for her immediately but doesn’t confess his feelings until the end of her stay. However, she tells him he should have told her earlier. In an attempt to change the outcome, Tim goes back in time to tell Charlotte during their holiday, but she advises him to wait until her last day there.

Heartbroken, Tim comes to the realization that the object of his affection does not reciprocate his feelings. Disillusioned by this truth, he makes the decision to leave behind what he believed was true love. Relocating to London, Tim pursues a career in law and shares a residence with Harry, an embittered and cynical playwright who is an acquaintance of his father’s. Seeking a change of pace, Tim dines at Dans le Noir restaurant where he meets Mary, a recent immigrant from America who works for a publishing company. Engaging in playful banter in the midst of complete darkness, Mary gives Tim her phone number before they part ways. Upon returning home, Tim is met with an upset Harry whose play has been derailed by an actor forgetting their lines on opening night. Refusing to let his friend’s hard work go to waste, Tim travels back in time to help the actor and successfully saves the production from disaster.
