Absolute Power (1997) is an American political action thriller film starring Clint Eastwood as a master jewel thief who witnesses the killing of a woman by Secret Service agents. In Washington, D.C., Luther Whitney breaks into the mansion of billionaire Walter Sullivan, only to find himself in hiding when Sullivan’s wife Christy arrives for a drunken rendezvous with Alan Richmond, the President of the United States. From his vantage point behind the bedroom vault’s one-way mirror, Whitney watches as Richmond becomes violent and Christy defends herself by wounding him with a letter opener. The situation quickly escalates when Richmond screams for help and Secret Service agents Bill Burton and Tim Collin burst in, mistaking Christy for an attacker and fatally shooting her.

As Chief of Staff Gloria Russell arrives on the scene, they all work together to cover up the incident and make it look like a burglary gone wrong. Whitney goes unnoticed until his getaway, pursued by agents. He manages to escape with millions in valuables and an incriminating letter opener. Seth Frank, a detective, leads the murder investigation. Though Whitney is a well-known burglar to authorities, Frank does not believe he is capable of murder since he has never been violent in his past crimes. Burton asks for updates on the case and secretly wiretaps Frank’s office phone. Just as Whitney plans to leave the country, he happens to see Richmond on TV publicly sympathizing with Sullivan – a close friend and financial supporter of the president – for his loss. This enrages Whitney, and he decides to bring Richmond to justice.
