The American sci-fi flick, Ad Astra (2019), was produced, co-written, and directed by James Gray. Set in the early 22nd century, humanity faces a looming threat as unexplained power surges threaten to disrupt civilization. Roy McBride, a military major, receives word that these surges are linked to the ‘Lima Project’, a space station orbiting Neptune on a mission to discover intelligent life. Coincidentally, Roy’s father, H. Clifford McBride, leads this project. Desperate for answers, Roy agrees to journey to Mars to investigate the fate of the station’s crew. Unfortunately, his trip is derailed when he and his colleague Pruitt are ambushed by scavenger pirates en route to the SpaceCom base on the Moon’s far side. Through sheer determination, they manage to fend off their attackers. After their escape, Pruitt discloses an ultimatum: if Roy fails to uncover proof of the crew’s survival, the Lima Project must be destroyed. With this in mind, Roy secures passage aboard the SpaceCom cruiser Cepheus headed for Mars.
Roy advises the captain of Cepheus, Tanner, to disregard a distress signal coming from a biomedical research station. However, Tanner reminds him that it is their duty to investigate such signals according to protocol. Despite their reluctance, they proceed to access the station and are suddenly attacked by a feral laboratory baboon. In the chaos, Tanner tragically loses his life while Roy manages to put an end to the aggressive primate by suffocating it in an airlock. The Cepheus faces another obstacle as it attempts to land on Mars during a sudden surge. Taking charge of the situation, Roy skillfully pilots the ship to safety. After seeking refuge in the secure underground SpaceCom complex, he begins sending recorded voice messages in hopes of reaching the Lima Project and making contact with Clifford. It takes several attempts before SpaceCom finally receives a response, but unfortunately Roy’s request to join the search party is denied.
