Adiós (2019)
Adiós (2019) is a Spanish drama film directed by Paco Cabezas, starring Mario Casas, Natalia de Molina, and Ruth Díaz. Set in Seville, Andalucía (southern Spain), the movie takes place in the neighborhood of Las 3.000 Viviendas (The 3,000 Homes or ‘The 3,000’ for short), a ruthless and lawless area where police have no control. Juan Santos, a con man with supervised freedom, is released from jail for one day to celebrate his daughter Estrella’s First Communion with his wife Triana. However, their joyous occasion turns tragic when Juan’s younger brother Chico and Uncle Andrés unexpectedly show up and offer him a drug smuggling job back into the jail. Refusing out of fear of losing his prison privileges, Juan rejects the offer. On their way home from the celebration, their car is involved in a fatal accident that kills Estrella. Meanwhile, veteran cop Manuel Santacana and his partner Eli are investigating a murder scene involving four Romanian drug traffickers when they are notified about the car crash involving Juan’s family.
After learning that the car responsible for Estrella’s death is linked to the Romanian killers, Juan seeks help from his mother María. A former mob boss of the Santos family, María was expelled from The 3,000 by rival families Fortuna and Taboa. With her assistance, Juan plans to avenge his daughter’s death. In their investigation, Eli and Manuel question a drug addict named Maravilla and discover evidence implicating the Fortuna family. The police mobilize to capture them all, but boss Gordo Fortuna and one of his sons manage to escape. Meanwhile, Juan, Andrés, and Chico conduct their own investigation with help from their neighbors, who point them towards another addict named Kempes. However, Eli uncovers a dark connection between the crime and Barroso despite Manuel’s objections due to lack of physical evidence. Additionally, Triana suspects she may be pregnant again. In order to get information on the Fortuna family’s involvement, Juan and his relatives agree to work as drug mules.
