Æon Flux (2005), an American science fiction action film, is based on the animated TV series of the same name created by Peter Chung. In 2011, a deadly pathogenic virus wiped out 99% of humanity, forcing the survivors to scatter and regroup across Earth. Eventually, five million humans settled in Bregna, a walled futuristic city ruled by scientists. Though Bregna may seem like an idyllic place compared to the destroyed Earth, people still go missing and suffer from nightmares. Æon Flux is a skilled warrior and part of the Monicans, an underground rebel group led by the Handler that uses telepathy technology to communicate. After her sister Una is killed for being mistaken as a Monican, Æon is sent on a mission to assassinate Trevor Goodchild, who governs Bregna.

However, she soon discovers that both she and the Monicans are merely puppets in a larger political game orchestrated by a group of council members seeking to overthrow Goodchild’s government. Æon delves into the origins of everyone in Bregna, including her own link to Trevor. The inhabitants of Bregna are unveiled as clones, created using recycled DNA. However, their recurring memories from past lives have led to a rise in unsettling dreams. The necessity of cloning arose from the infertility caused by the virus, and Trevor has been tirelessly working on finding a solution through repeated experiments with his previous clones. Æon soon discovers that she too is one of these clones.
