After Earth (2013) is an American post-apocalyptic action film directed by M. Night Shyamalan and co-written with Gary Whitta. Loosely based on an original idea by Will Smith, the story follows a father-and-son journey in a futuristic world where humans have evacuated Earth due to a massive environmental disaster. Set 1,000 years later on the human-populated space colony Nova Prime, the S’krell extraterrestrial race threatens to take over using their fierce creatures known as Ursas, who hunt by sensing fear. The Ranger Corps, a peacekeeping organization, has developed a technique called ‘ghosting’ to suppress fear and defeat the Ursas. However, an Ursa kills Senshi, the daughter of their leader Cypher Raige before they are able to use this technique. Blaming himself for Senshi’s death, Cypher’s son Kitai trains to become a Ranger like his father but is rejected upon application. In a last effort before retirement, Kitai’s mother Faia convinces Cypher to take him on their final voyage together.
Their spaceship is caught in an asteroid shower during flight, causing a crash-landing on Earth. The humans had evacuated the planet a thousand years earlier due to an environmental cataclysm. Despite the dangers, the two survive the impact, but unfortunately Cypher’s legs are broken and the main beacon for distress signals is damaged. To alert Nova Prime, Cypher tasks Kitai with finding the tail section of their ship, which broke off upon entry into the atmosphere. Inside, they can use a backup beacon to signal for help. Before he sets out, Cypher equips Kitai with his weaponized cutlass, a wrist communicator, and six oxygen-enhancing capsules to sustain him in Earth’s low-oxygen environment. Knowing the risks of encountering evolved flora and fauna as well as volatile temperature changes on Earth, Cypher advises Kitai to proceed with caution while guiding him through the communicator.
