After Hours (1985)
After Hours (1985) is an American black comedy film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Joseph Minion. Following a tedious day at work, data entry worker Paul Hackett strikes up a conversation with a stranger named Marcy Franklin in a New York City cafe. She reveals that she shares an apartment in SoHo with a sculptor named Kiki Bridges, who creates and sells paperweights resembling cream cheese bagels. After receiving her number, Paul decides to call under the guise of purchasing one of the paperweights. He hails a cab to the apartment later that night but unfortunately, his $20 bill flies out the window, leaving him with only small change. The cab driver is shocked by this turn of events. Upon arriving at the apartment, Paul meets Kiki who is working on an eerie sculpture resembling Edvard Munch’s famous ‘The Scream’.
While searching through Marcy’s belongings, he comes across items indicating she may have scars from burns. Her odd behavior combined with this revelation causes him to abruptly end their encounter. Paul tries to make his way home on the subway, but the fare has gone up at midnight and he no longer has enough money after losing $20. He ends up at a bar where a waitress named Julie takes a liking to him right away. While there, he discovers that there have been several break-ins in the area. The bartender, Tom Schorr, kindly offers to lend Paul money for a subway token, but unfortunately he can’t get the cash register open. They come up with a solution by trading keys – Paul will go to Tom’s place to retrieve the key for the cash register.
