After Lucia (2012)
Mexican director Michel Franco’s drama film, After Lucia (2012), was a top prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. The story follows Roberto, who is devastated by his wife Lucía’s death in a car accident. Seeking a fresh start, he moves to Mexico City with his teenage daughter Alejandra. However, after attending a party with her new classmates, Alejandra becomes the target of bullying and is labeled as a ‘slut’ through circulated footage and hurtful text messages. Despite this mistreatment, she remains silent about the incidents to avoid further harassment.
The school arranges a trip to Veracruz, mandatory for all students. Upon arrival at the resort, each group of four shares a room. Unfortunately, Alejandra’s female roommates once again pressure her into showering and then block the bathroom door. Meanwhile, the boys take turns using the bathroom while the rest of the students party in the main room. Eventually, they all head to the beach to continue celebrating. During this time, Alejandra falls asleep on the sand and is unknowingly urinated on by one of the boys. In an attempt to help her clean up, one of Alejandra’s female peers suggests she goes into the sea.
