Antonio Campos’ Afterschool (2008) is a gripping psychological drama starring Ezra Miller in their first film role. While working on a project at a private school, Robert, an internet video-obsessed teen, stumbles upon the tragic death of twin sisters who ingested rat poison-laced drugs. Instead of seeking help, Robert sits with the girls as they pass away, the heartbreaking scene captured by both his camera and another student’s cell phone. Viewers are only shown this from behind Robert’s back, unable to witness the girls’ demise but hearing their cries diminish. The entire incident is recorded on Robert’s school project camera. Following the deaths, a sense of fear and tension permeates throughout the students and faculty, affecting even Robert himself.

According to the school, the purchase of drugs occurred outside of school premises which led them to implement a stricter drug policy. This includes conducting bag searches and expelling students who are found in possession of illegal substances. Assigned with creating a memorial video are two students, Robert and Amy. The initial version was not to the school’s liking, resulting in them requesting for it to be re-edited for a smoother outcome. During the process of making the video, Robert and Amy develop a romantic relationship. However, there is a suspicion that Amy’s involvement with someone else may cause trouble between Robert and his roommate, who had sold drugs to both girls. In an altercation with his roommate, Robert makes accusations of being responsible for the girls’ deaths due to selling them drugs.
