Aftershock (2010)
Aftershock (2010) is a disaster-drama from China, directed by Feng Xiaogang and produced by Huayi Brothers. Li Yuanni and her husband, Fang Daqiang, along with their twins, Fang Deng and Fang Da, reside in Tangshan’s compact apartment. On the morning of July 28th, 1976, the couple engage in intimacy after tucking their children into bed. Suddenly, an earthquake strikes, causing buildings to crumble. As they rush back to rescue their kids, Fang urges Li to stay behind as he runs ahead of her but tragically gets crushed under falling debris. Their apartment complex collapses and traps their children beneath a pile of rubble.
Following the earthquake, a rescue team informs Li that her twins are trapped under a large slab of concrete. They explain that attempting to lift the slab would result in one of her children being crushed to death. With a heavy heart, Li chooses to save her son, Fang Da. Luckily, Fang Deng survives and regains consciousness later on amidst several deceased bodies. Believed to be an orphan, Fang Deng is taken in by a military couple, Wang Deqing and Dong Guilan, who bring her back to their home in Beijing. She is given a new name, Wang Deng, after adopting her father’s surname. Ten years go by and she moves away from home to pursue higher education at a university in Hangzhou. It’s there that she meets Yang Zhi, a graduate student with whom she develops an intimate relationship.
