Against the Ice (2022)
Against the Ice (2022) is a survival film set in 1909, based on the true story from Two Against the Ice by Ejnar Mikkelsen. Directed by Peter Flinth and written by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Joe Derrick, it follows Danish explorer Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen as he leads an expedition to Shannon Island in East Greenland. The purpose of this journey is to retrieve records from the ill-fated Denmark expedition. Unfortunately, their first attempt is unsuccessful and results in one crewman suffering frostbite. However, during their trek, Mikkelsen discovers a fallen member of the Denmark expedition who has left behind a logbook and map indicating the location of a cairn built by their team. With only one volunteer, inexperienced engineer Iver Iversen, willing to join him on a second attempt, Mikkelsen sets off while the rest of the crew remains behind.
Mikkelsen and Iversen encounter multiple challenges during their expedition. Two of their sled dogs go missing within the first few days, and they are forced to make tough decisions about sacrificing the remaining dogs for food. Despite these difficulties, they persevere and even manage to successfully kill a polar bear. After three months of treacherous terrain, they finally reach the cairn containing crucial records that disprove the existence of the Peary Channel. This discovery proves that Greenland is actually one single island and discredits any potential claim for the United States in the Arctic. However, their journey is far from over as on their way back, Mikkelsen fears for their survival and they take precautions by building another cairn 200 miles from Shannon Island to store important documentation from their Denmark expedition. Unfortunately, when they finally return to Shannon Island, they discover that the rest of their crew has left them stranded without any means of returning home.
