Aladdin (2019)
Directed by Guy Ritchie and coproduced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback, Aladdin (2019) is a musical fantasy film that serves as a live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1992 animated movie. It draws inspiration from Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, a French addition to the Middle Eastern folktales found in One Thousand and One Nights. The story follows Aladdin, an orphaned street urchin living in the fictional city of Agrabah (based on Baghdad), and his trusty sidekick, Abu the monkey. Their paths cross with Princess Jasmine, who longs to take over her father’s role as Sultan but is instead pressured into marrying a royal suitor. Jafar, the cunning Grand Vizier, plots against the Sultan and sets his sights on a magic lamp that can only be obtained by ‘the diamond in the rough’. When Aladdin and Abu are captured by Jafar while sneaking into the palace, he promises them riches beyond their wildest dreams if they retrieve the lamp from the treacherous Cave of Wonders. With some help from a magical carpet, Aladdin manages to obtain the lamp but unknowingly falls victim to Jafar’s deceitful tactics.
Trapped in the cave, Aladdin summons the omnipotent Genie with a rub of the lamp. This powerful being has the ability to grant three wishes to whoever possesses the lamp. Without using a wish, Aladdin cleverly gets them out of the cave. In his pursuit to win over Jasmine’s heart, he uses his first wish to transform into a prince and pledges to use his third wish to release the Genie from servitude and make him human. As ‘Prince Ali of Ababwa’, Aladdin makes a grand entrance into Agrabah but struggles to impress Jasmine. The Genie disguises himself as Aladdin’s human attendant and falls for Dalia, Jasmine’s handmaiden. During a magical carpet ride, Aladdin and Jasmine bond. However, when he accidentally reveals his true identity, Aladdin lies about being a prince disguised as a peasant in order to roam freely in Agrabah.
