Alexander (2004)
The epic historical drama film Alexander (2004) is based on the life of the ancient Macedonian general and king, Alexander the Great. Narrated by Ptolemy I Soter, basileus and pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt, the story follows Alexander’s journey starting from his childhood with his mother Olympias and mentor Aristotle. As he grows up, Alexander becomes interested in love, honor, music, exploration, poetry and military combat. However, his relationship with his father Philip II of Macedon takes a negative turn when Philip marries Eurydice, niece of Attalus who Alexander has disowned. This conflict leads to Alexander’s banishment from the palace. After Philip is assassinated, Alexander assumes the throne as King of Macedonia.
Ptolemy also mentions significant events like the destruction of Thebes and burning of Persepolis during his punitive campaign, followed by an overview of his west-Persian campaign which includes notable moments such as being declared as the son of Zeus by Oracle at Siwa Oasis, defeating Persian Emperor Darius III in the Battle of Gaugamela and embarking on an eight-year long campaign across Asia. Alexander’s closest relationships include those with his childhood friend, Hephaestion, as well as Bagoas and his later wife, Roxana. Reflecting on their bond, Hephaestion likens Alexander to Achilles and is met with a response from Alexander himself, who declares that Hephaestion must be his own Patroclus (Achilles’ lover).
