Michael Mann’s biographical sports drama film Ali (2001) follows the journey of boxer Cassius Clay Jr. leading up to his first championship match against heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. Clay taunts Liston and initially dominates the fight, but midway through he experiences a burning sensation in his eyes, causing him to briefly believe Liston has cheated. With encouragement from trainer/manager Angelo Dundee, Clay regains his vision and ultimately wins the match, becoming the second-youngest heavyweight champion at that time. Along the way, he meets with Malcolm X and is eventually given the name Muhammad Ali during a visit to Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad’s home.
Ali’s father, Cassius Clay Sr., expresses his disapproval. Despite being an ex-Playboy Bunny and not following Muslim beliefs or sex segregation, Ali marries Sonji Roi. During a trip to Africa, he reunites with Malcolm X but later follows Elijah Muhammad’s wishes and does not speak to him. The assassination of Malcolm X deeply affects Ali. Upon returning to the United States, he faces off against Sonny Liston again and knocks him out in the first round. However, his marriage with Sonji falls apart due to her objections towards the obligations of Muslim women. After refusing conscription for the Vietnam War, Ali is stripped of his boxing license, passport and title, and sentenced to five years in prison. Later on, at the age of 17, Ali marries Belinda Boyd.
