Alice (1990)
Alice (1990), an American fantasy romantic comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, follows the story of Alice Tate. Alice is an upper-class Manhattan homemaker who indulges in shopping, beauty treatments, and gossip with her friends. After being married to the wealthy Doug for 16 years, their two children are primarily raised by a nanny. One day, she meets Joe Ruffalo, a handsome jazz musician, and feels drawn to him. Despite her Catholic guilt for these emotions, which eventually manifest as a backache, she seeks help from Dr. Yang – an Asian herbalist who hypnotizes her. Under hypnosis, Alice reveals that she was initially attracted to her husband’s superficial qualities of looks and money. She also opens up about her feelings towards Joe.
Dr. Yang provides Alice with ancient herbs that stimulate her to act on her feelings for Joe. Though initially hesitant, they agree to meet. However, upon the herbs wearing off, Alice is shocked by her actions and ultimately decides not to go through with the meeting. Later on, she receives another batch of herbs which render her invisible. Curiosity gets the best of her as she spies on Joe’s visit to his ex-wife Vicki and witnesses them engaging in sexual activities in Vicki’s office, much to Alice’s conservative sensibilities. In hindsight, she is relieved that she did not follow through with their initial meeting. With the help of yet another herbal remedy, Alice is able to communicate with the ghost of her first lover, Ed, who encourages her to explore this newfound potential relationship with Joe further.
