Being a former singer, she hopes to revive her abandoned singing career. However, their financial struggles lead them to make a temporary stop in Phoenix, Arizona where Alice finds work as a lounge singer. It is there that she meets Ben, a charming and seemingly single man who initiates a sexual relationship with her. However, things abruptly end when Ben’s wife Rita confronts Alice.
In Alice’s apartment, Ben forcibly attacks Rita while she is present, and also makes threats towards Alice before causing damage to the apartment. Due to the fear for their safety, both Alice and Tommy hastily leave town. However, their unplanned escape results in them using up most of their remaining funds. In order to support herself and Tommy, Alice accepts a position as a waitress at a local diner owned by Mel in Tucson, Arizona. She forms close connections with her co-workers: Flo, who is independent and outspoken; and Vera, who is timid and inexperienced. During this time, Alice also meets David, a divorced rancher from the area. Despite being initially hesitant due to her past experiences, Alice starts to warm up to David as he develops a paternal bond with Tommy.
