Alita: Battle Angel (2019) is an American cyberpunk action film adapted from Yukito Kishiro’s Gunnm manga series. The story takes place in 2563 on a ravaged Earth, dubbed ‘The Fall’, where Dr. Dyson Ido comes across a brain-attached cyborg while scavenging for parts in Iron City’s scrapyard. After reuniting the body and brain, Ido names the cyborg ‘Alita’ after his late daughter. With no recollection of her past, Alita quickly forms a bond with Hugo, a young man longing to escape to the opulent sky city of Zalem, and Dr. Chiren, Ido’s estranged ex-wife. Upon discovering Motorball, a popular sport among cyborgs similar to Rollerball, Alita encounters Vector, the tournament’s owner and de facto leader of Iron City’s governing authority who secretly profits from Hugo’s theft of cyborg parts.
One evening, Alita accompanies Ido as they are suddenly attacked by a group of cyborg serial killers led by Grewishka. Ido gets injured and Alita instinctively utilizes ‘Panzer-Kunst’, a lost combat art for machine bodies, to retaliate. She successfully eliminates two of the cyborgs and wounds Grewishka who then retreats. While recovering, Ido discloses his occupation as a Hunter-Warrior, a bounty hunter hired by the Factory. In desperate need of assistance, Grewishka seeks out Dr. Chiren who is employed by Vector. Despite Alita’s belief that fighting will help unlock her past, Ido advises against her becoming a Hunter-Warrior. However, Alita stumbles upon an advanced cyborg body in a crashed spaceship outside the city which belonged to her former enemy nation, the United Republic of Mars (URM). Unfortunately, Ido refuses to install her in it due to its origins as deadly shock troops during the Fall.
